Another batch of ATCs. Some more pansy ones, followed by a few inspired by a visit to the Jenolan Caves (look for stalagmite type ones), then a series of composition ones (high horizon, parallel lines, strata, basic shapes etc).
Some absolute stinkers but I learn something from everyone. Also a great warm up exercise - a bit like stretching.

You have been flat out! Well done! I can easily recognise the caves having been to them lots of time as a child!
Haven't seen an answer on size yet - surely you aren't being shy on the point??
OK - confession time. The 3 'big' quilts are all digital. ie - took my basic block and used Photoshop to create a larger quilt. I was really aware that the smaller initial quilts lacked impact. And I think with quilts one of the ways you achieve that is with size.
I was wondering what the smaller pieces would look like large but didn't want to spend weeks making something bigger and then being disappointed. So used the modern version of the 2 mirrors (remember putting a block into 2 perpendicular mirrors to see what they look like repeated?). I think this method is a good way of me playing with composition but not committing all my time to something that isn't going to work. That's where the ATCs are also useful to play and test ideas.
I am really enjoying reading Twyla Tharp and I can't remember if this is one of the things she said or I came to it from somewhere else but I realized I am really good at second guessing myself and convincing myself something isn't any good before I really try. For example the first little 'map' quilt I nearly didn't finish - took me ages because I was thinking - this doesn't look any good etc and nearly didn't bother to finish it and quilt it. I'm now glad that I did because I was stunned to see how it looked as a larger quilt.
If I completed it as a physical quilt I would make it about 180x200. They need to be seriously big. I was thinking about one of my first quilts 'Storm at Sea' which I made quite big and looked stunning hanging at Wellington Quilters exhibition - gosh must have been 12 years ago - Helen was pregnant with Eddie.
So apologies - I wanted to see what you guys thought first before I owned up.
I am working on another 'map' quilt (also just made a disastrous 'pet portrait') but also starting to think about symposium. BUT -I don't know if I'm eligible - I'm not a NZ resident.
Clever, clever!! Good idea to use smoke and mirrors. Sorry to nag about size when I'd missed where you replied. Maybe you need to work on stopping second guessing - just keep doing the work till it's done and then judge. Just a thought. People come to symposium from all over including Oz - registrations aren't limited to NZers. Ya pays ya money and ya gets ya entry.
